The vibrant yellow fabric with white cat faces in the image shows just how much personality you can pack into this little bag!

This tutorial will guide you through making this charming, structured bag – truly the easiest way to create a functional and stylish carry-all.

Why You'll Love This Project:

  • Beginner-Friendly: One of the simplest bag patterns, great for learning basic sewing skills.

  • Quick to Make: You can whip this up in an afternoon!

  • Versatile: Use it for lunch, makeup, crafting, or small toys.

  • Customizable: Choose any fun fabric print to match your style.

  • Practical: Zipper closure keeps contents secure, and handles make it easy to carry.

What You'll Need:

  • Main Fabric: Approximately 1/2 to 3/4 yard (0.5 to 0.7 meters) of medium-weight woven fabric. Cotton canvas, duck cloth, or sturdy quilting cotton are perfect. (The example fabric with cats is adorable!).

  • Webbing for Handles: About 1 yard (1 meter) of 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide cotton or polyester webbing in a coordinating color (like the white in the image).

  • Zipper: A plastic or metal zipper, 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) long, depending on your desired bag size.

  • Optional: Lightweight Fusible Interfacing: If your fabric isn't very stiff and you want more structure, fuse it to your main fabric pieces.

  • Sewing Machine: With a universal needle and a zipper foot.

  • Matching Polyester Thread.

  • Fabric Scissors or Rotary Cutter and Mat.

  • Measuring Tape or Ruler.

  • Fabric Chalk or Washable Marker.

  • Pins or Wonder Clips: Clips are excellent for holding multiple layers and straps.

  • Iron and Ironing Board.

Step-by-Step Pattern & Sewing Guide:

Step 1: Cut Your Fabric Pieces

This bag is incredibly simple, made from just three main pieces of fabric (plus handles):

  1. Main Body Piece (Cut 1): This is a long rectangle that will form the front, back, and bottom of your bag.

    • Length: This will be (Desired Bag Length x 2) + (Desired Bag Width) + 1 inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance.

      • Example: For a bag 8 inches long x 5 inches wide, the length would be (8 x 2) + 5 + 1 = 16 + 5 + 1 = 22 inches (55 cm).

    • Width: This will be Desired Bag Height + 1 inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance.

      • Example: For a bag 6 inches high, the width would be 6 + 1 = 7 inches (17.5 cm).

    • Cut one rectangle according to your calculated dimensions.

    • Tip: If using directional fabric like the cats, make sure the pattern runs correctly when the bag is assembled (e.g., cats upright on front and back).

  2. Side Panel Pieces (Cut 2): These are two rectangles that will form the ends of your bag.

    • Length: This will be Desired Bag Height + 1 inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance.

    • Width: This will be Desired Bag Width + 1 inch (2.5 cm) seam allowance.

    • Cut two rectangles according to your calculated dimensions.

  3. Handle Pieces (Cut 2):

    • Cut two pieces of webbing, each about 16-20 inches (40-50 cm) long, or your desired handle length.

Step 2: Prepare the Main Body for the Zipper

  1. Hem Zipper Edges: Take your Main Body Piece. Along both of the long edges (the (Desired Bag Height + 1") side), fold under the raw edge by 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) towards the wrong side and press. Fold under again by another 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) and press. This creates a neat, double-folded hem for your zipper.

Step 3: Attach the Zipper

  1. Align Zipper: Place your zipper face down along one of these prepared folded edges of the Main Body Piece (right side of fabric). Align the zipper tape edge with the fabric edge. Pin securely.

  2. Stitch: Using your sewing machine's zipper foot, stitch the zipper in place close to the folded edge.

  3. Repeat: Repeat for the other side of the zipper, attaching it to the opposing folded edge of the Main Body Piece. The zipper should now connect the two long edges of your Main Body Piece.

  4. Topstitch (Optional): Topstitch on either side of the zipper, parallel to the zipper teeth, for a clean and professional finish. This also helps the fabric lay flat.

Step 4: Attach the Handles

  1. Find Placement: With your Main Body Piece now having the zipper installed, lay it flat with the zipper in the center. The two halves of the fabric will be the front and back of your bag.

  2. Pin Handles: On one half (which will be the front), measure in from each side seam by about 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) and pin one end of a handle webbing piece. The webbing should extend towards the zipper. Repeat for the other end of the same handle. Make sure the handle isn't twisted.

  3. Stitch Handles: Stitch the handle ends securely in place. You can use a square or an "X" box stitch for extra reinforcement. Repeat for the second handle on the other half (back) of the bag.

Step 5: Assemble the Bag Body

  1. Sew Side Seams: Fold your Main Body Piece in half, right sides together, so the two short ends meet. Pin along this seam. Stitch with a 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) seam allowance. This forms a tube with the zipper at the top and the handles attached. Press seam open and finish raw edges if desired.

  2. Attach Side Panels:

    • Take one Side Panel Piece. Divide its perimeter into quarters and mark (top, bottom, and sides). Do the same for the opening of your main bag body (aligning the side seam you just sewed with one of the side marks on the panel).

    • Align the marks, placing the Side Panel (right side up) into the opening of the Main Body Piece (which is still inside out).

    • Carefully pin the entire perimeter of the Side Panel to the Main Body opening. Go slowly around the corners, easing the fabric as needed. Use plenty of pins or clips.

    • Stitch this seam with a 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) seam allowance.

    • Tip: Clip the seam allowances of the corners after stitching to help them lay flat. You can also finish these raw edges with a zigzag stitch or serger.

    • Repeat for the other Side Panel.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

  1. Turn Right Side Out: Open your zipper partway, and carefully turn your bag right side out.

  2. Shape & Press: Use a point turner or a dull pencil to push out the corners and side seams to get a nice, crisp boxy shape. Give the entire bag a good press with an iron.

  3. Admire! Your super cute and easy boxy zipper bag is complete!
