A zippered tote bag is the ultimate accessory for staying organized and stylish on the go. Whether you're heading to work, the gym, or a weekend getaway, a bag that securely holds your essentials is a must-have. This detailed tutorial will walk you through the process of sewing a structured tote bag complete with a zippered top and an inner zippered pocket. The result is a professional-looking bag that is both durable and incredibly functional.
Materials You'll Need
To create a bag with the sturdy structure shown in the video, it's essential to use the right materials. The final bag will be approximately 30cm long, 16cm wide, and 24cm high.
Outer Fabric: Two pieces of cotton canvas for the main body (34cm x 26cm each) and one piece for the base (34cm x 18cm).
Lining Fabric: Two pieces of cotton fabric for the main body lining (34cm x 26cm each), one piece for the base lining (34cm x 18cm), and one piece for the inner pocket (20cm x 30cm).
Interfacing: Two pieces of fusible interfacing for the main body (34cm x 26cm each) and one piece for the base (34cm x 18cm).
Straps: Two pieces of spun polyester strap (50cm long each).
Zippers: One main zipper (40cm long) and one smaller zipper for the inner pocket (20cm long).
Tools:
Sewing machine with a standard and zipper foot
Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter
Pins or Clover clips
A ruler and fabric marker
An iron and ironing board
A lighter (for sealing strap ends)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps carefully to construct your custom zippered tote bag.
1. Prepare Your Fabric Start by cutting all your fabric pieces to the specified dimensions. Iron your interfacing onto the wrong side of your outer fabric pieces (main body and base). This step is crucial for giving your bag a firm, professional shape.
2. Create the Inner Zippered Pocket This is a clever and satisfying part of the project.
Lay one of your lining fabric body pieces right-side up.
Place your inner pocket fabric on top, right-side down, aligning it with where you want the pocket to be.
Draw a rectangle on the lining fabric where the zipper will go, slightly smaller than the zipper's length.
Sew along the perimeter of the drawn rectangle.
Cut a slit down the center of the rectangle, cutting a "Y" shape at each end to the corners of your stitching.
Push the pocket fabric through this opening to the inside of the lining. Press the edges flat with an iron.
Pin the 20cm zipper into the opening, and use a zipper foot to carefully sew around the perimeter to secure it.
3. Assemble the Bag Body
Sew the outer fabric body pieces to the outer base piece, right sides together. Repeat this for the lining fabric pieces and the lining base piece, leaving a 15cm opening in the middle of the lining's base seam. This will be used to turn the bag right-side out later.
Create the box corners by pinching the bottom corners of both the outer bag and the lining, aligning the side and bottom seams. Sew across the flat end to create a neat, square bottom. Trim the excess fabric.
4. Prepare the Handles Take your two polyester straps. Use a lighter to carefully melt and seal the ends of each strap. This will prevent them from fraying over time. Pin the handles to the top edge of the outer bag body, ensuring they are evenly spaced and positioned correctly. Sew them in place with a strong seam.
5. Attach the Main Zipper This is where the bag comes together.
Take your 40cm zipper and pin it to the top opening of the outer bag, right sides facing. Sew it in place.
Now, pin the lining bag (with the inner pocket) to the other side of the zipper, with the right side of the lining facing the right side of the zipper. Sew this seam.
6. Final Assembly and Finishing Touches
Open the main zipper about halfway.
Through the 15cm opening in the lining's base, pull the entire outer bag and lining right-side out.
Use your fingers to carefully push out all the corners and seams.
Hand-sew the opening in the lining's base closed using an invisible stitch, or machine-stitch it closed for a quick and durable finish.
Give the entire bag one final press with an iron to smooth out any wrinkles and make it look professional.
Your new zippered tote bag is now ready to be used! Enjoy the satisfaction of having created a custom, organized, and stylish bag all by yourself.
