Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Size (Approximate):

  • Dimensions: Varies based on the dimensions of the fabric pieces in the video.

  • The video shows a finished bag that is approximately 14 inches (35.5 cm) high and 13 inches (33 cm) wide, with a base of 4 inches (10 cm).

  • Size can vary based on fabric and seam allowance.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Main Fabric:

    • A sturdy fabric for the bag's exterior, such as velvet, canvas, or denim.

    • The video uses a combination of velvet, felt, and chintz fabric.

  • Lining Fabric:

    • A contrasting fabric for the bag's interior lining.

  • Handles:

    • A separate piece of fabric for the handles, or pre-made webbing handles.

  • Cord: A piece of cord to add structure and firmness to the handles.

  • Thermo Adhesive Web (Optional): To add structure to the handles.

  • Thread: A thread color that matches your main fabric.

  • Sewing Machine

  • Scissors

  • Pins or Clips

  • Iron and Ironing Board

Cutting Your Fabric Pieces:

  • From Main Fabric:

    • Bag Body: Cut 2 rectangles, 15 inches x 14 inches (38 cm x 35.5 cm).

  • From Handles Fabric:

    • Handles: Cut 2 long strips, 25 inches (63 cm) long and 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions:

Part 1: Preparing the Main Body

  1. Take your two main body fabric pieces. The video shows combining velvet, felt, and chintz to create a layered fabric. You can achieve a similar effect with your own fabric combinations.

  2. Place the two main body pieces right sides together.

  3. Sew along the two side seams and the bottom seam, leaving the top open.

  4. Create the Boxed Corners: At the bottom corners, pinch the side seam and the bottom seam together to form a triangle. Sew a straight line across the corner, about 2 inches (5 cm) from the point. Trim the excess fabric. Repeat for the other corner.

Part 2: Making the Handles

  1. Take your two handle pieces. Fold each handle in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew a seam along the long edge.

  2. Turn the handles right side out and press them flat.

  3. The video shows adding a cord and thermo adhesive web to the handles for extra structure and firmness. If you are doing this, insert the cord into the handle and use the thermo adhesive web to secure it. Topstitch along both long edges for a professional finish.

Part 3: Assembling the Bag

  1. Turn the main body of the bag right side out.

  2. Pin the ends of the handles to the top of the outer bag, about 4 inches (10 cm) in from each side seam. The raw edges of the handles should be aligned with the raw edges of the bag opening.

  3. Sew the top edges of the bag together, securing the handles in place.

  4. Turn the bag inside out and sew the top seam again for extra security.

  5. Trim any excess material and turn the bag right side out.

  6. Press the top edge of the bag, making sure the seam is hidden.

  7. Topstitch all the way around the top of the bag to give it a professional finish.
