Making your own slippers is a fantastic project that results in a pair of cozy, custom-fit shoes. This pattern focuses on a simple, two-piece construction for the main body of the slipper, making it a quick and rewarding project. You can mix and match fabrics to create a unique pair for yourself or as a thoughtful gift.
This pattern is a great project for a confident beginner who is comfortable with simple pattern making and sewing curves.
Materials
Outer Fabric: A cozy, medium-weight fabric like fleece, flannel, or minky fabric (about a half-yard).
Sole Fabric: A durable, non-slip fabric like gripper fabric or even old denim for a sturdy feel (about a quarter-yard).
Lining Fabric: A soft, comfortable fabric like fleece or flannel for the inside (about a half-yard).
Thread: All-purpose thread that matches your fabric.
Basic sewing supplies: Sewing machine, scissors, pins or clips, a fabric pen or pencil, and an iron.
Key Concepts & Pattern Making
The key to this pattern is creating a separate top and bottom pattern piece for a precise fit.
Sole Pattern: Place your foot on a large piece of paper and trace all the way around it. Cut out this tracing. This will be your Sole Pattern Piece.
Upper Pattern: Now, place your foot on another piece of paper and draw a line around the top of your foot. Start from just behind your ankle and draw a curve that comes forward to just past your toes. This will be your Upper Pattern Piece. You'll need to add a seam allowance to this piece, so be generous.
Sewing Instructions
Note: Use a 1/2-inch seam allowance throughout the pattern unless otherwise noted.
Step 1: Cut the Fabric Pieces
Place your Sole Pattern Piece on your outer fabric and cut two mirror-image pieces. Repeat this for your lining fabric and your sole fabric.
Place your Upper Pattern Piece on your outer fabric and cut two mirror-image pieces. Repeat this for your lining fabric.
Step 2: Assemble the Slipper Uppers
Take one of your Upper pieces and one of your Upper lining pieces. Place them right sides together and pin along the curved top edge. Sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Trim the seam allowance and clip the curve. Turn the piece right-side out and press it flat. Repeat for the other slipper.
Step 3: Sew the Slipper Body
Take one of your Outer Sole pieces and one of your Upper pieces. With the slipper upper now right side out, pin it to the outer sole piece. Align the toe curves and pin around the front of the slipper. This will form the main body of the slipper.
Sew the upper to the sole. You will be sewing around a curve, so go slowly. Repeat for the other slipper.
Step 4: Add the Non-Slip Sole and Lining
Take one of your Sole fabric pieces and one of your Lining fabric pieces. Place them right sides together and sew them together all the way around, leaving a 3-inch opening at the heel for turning.
Clip the curves and turn the sole/lining piece right-side out. Hand-sew the opening closed. Repeat for the second slipper.
Take your completed upper body and place the sole/lining piece inside it. You can either hand-sew the two pieces together or use a strong machine stitch for extra durability.
Step 5: Final Touches
To finish the raw edges at the top opening of the slipper, you can add a simple rolled hem or a fabric binding.
Trim any excess threads and give your slippers a final press.
Your new, simple slip-on slippers are now complete!
