DIY Double Zipper Pouch: The Ultimate Organized Pouch Bag

Tired of juggling multiple small pouches for your essentials? This project is the perfect solution. This detailed tutorial will guide you through creating a chic and practical double zipper pouch. With two separate zippered compartments, this bag is a masterclass in organization. It's ideal for a makeup bag, a travel pouch for electronics, or a small clutch for a night out. This project, while featuring a few more steps than a basic pouch, is a rewarding challenge for intermediate sewers who want to create a truly professional-looking and highly functional accessory.

Materials You'll Need

This guide provides detailed dimensions for a pouch approximately 24 cm wide, 14 cm high, and 6 cm deep. You can adjust the measurements as needed to suit your preferences.

  • Outer Fabric: A sturdy fabric like cotton canvas or home decor fabric.

    • 2 pieces for the main panels (28cm x 17cm each)

    • 2 pieces for the side panels (8cm x 17cm each)

  • Lining Fabric: A lighter-weight cotton fabric.

    • 4 pieces for the main panels (28cm x 17cm each)

    • 2 pieces for the side panels (8cm x 17cm each)

  • Interfacing: A medium-weight fusible interfacing.

    • 2 pieces for the main panels (28cm x 17cm each)

  • Zippers:

    • 2 zippers, each 28 cm long

  • Hardware:

    • 2 D-rings (2 cm diameter)

    • 2 swivel hooks (for the strap)

  • Strap Fabric: A strip of outer fabric or webbing for the detachable strap.

    • 1 piece for the strap (110cm x 5cm)

    • 2 small pieces for the D-ring holders (8cm x 5cm each)

  • Tools:

    • Sewing machine with a zipper foot

    • Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

    • Pins or Clover clips

    • A ruler and fabric marker

    • An iron and ironing board

Part 1: Preparing Fabric and Zippers

This project begins with a few key preparation steps to ensure a clean, professional finish.

  1. Cut and Fuse: First, cut all your fabric pieces to the specified dimensions. Iron the fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of your two outer fabric main panels. This will give your pouch a firm, structured feel.

  2. Attach the Zippers: This is the most important step for creating the double zipper effect.

    • Take one of your outer fabric main panels (28cm x 17cm). Lay it right-side up.

    • Place a 28cm zipper on top, teeth down, aligning the top edge.

    • Place a lining fabric panel on top, right-side down, creating a fabric-zipper-fabric sandwich. Pin and sew with a zipper foot.

    • Repeat this process for the second zipper and the other side of the outer fabric and a second lining panel.

    • You will now have one large fabric piece with two zippers attached. Flip the fabrics away from the zippers and press.

Part 2: Assembling the Pouch and Straps

This is where the bag's shape and functionality start to come together.

  1. Create the D-Ring Holders: Take your two small strap fabric pieces (8cm x 5cm). Fold them in half lengthwise and sew a seam. Turn the tubes right-side out. Thread a D-ring onto each fabric loop and fold the fabric to create a finished D-ring holder.

  2. Attach the D-Ring Holders: Pin one of the D-ring holders to the side of the zipper panel. Sew it in place. Repeat this for the second D-ring holder on the opposite side of the zipper panel.

  3. Construct the Pouch Body: Pin the two outer main panels together, right sides facing, and sew the side seams. Pin the two outer side panels and the bottom gusset together, and sew them to the main body to create the 3D box shape. Repeat this process for the lining pieces to form the lining pouch body, but leave a large opening (about 5-6 inches) in the bottom seam of the lining. This will be used to turn the bag right-side out later.

Part 3: Final Assembly and Finishing Touches

Now it's time to bring all the pieces together to create the final pouch.

  1. Nest the Pouches: Turn the outer bag right-side out and the lining wrong-side out. Insert the lining into the outer bag, so the right sides of both fabrics are facing each other. The top edges of both bags should be aligned. Pin and sew all the way around the top opening.

  2. Turn and Close: Make sure both zippers are open about halfway. Pull the entire bag through the opening you left in the bottom seam of the lining. Use your fingers to push out all the corners. Give the bag one final press. Hand-sew or machine-stitch the opening in the lining closed.

  3. Make the Strap: Take your long strap fabric piece (110cm x 5cm). Fold the long edges in towards the center and press. Fold it in half lengthwise, enclosing the raw edges, and press again. Sew a topstitch along both long edges. Attach a swivel hook to each end of the strap.

  4. Finalize: Clip the strap onto the two D-rings you attached earlier.

Your new double zipper pouch is now ready to use! Enjoy the satisfaction of having created a custom, organized, and stylish bag all by yourself.
