Tips for sewing a simple zipper tote bag

A great tote bag is a daily essential, but a custom, two-tone tote bag with a secure zipper closure is a statement piece. This detailed tutorial will walk you through the process of sewing a stylish and functional tote bag that features a professional-looking zipper, inner pockets for organization, and a unique two-color design. Perfect for everyday use, this bag is a rewarding project for anyone with a solid grasp of basic sewing techniques.

Materials You'll Need

This guide provides detailed dimensions to create a finished bag approximately 32 cm wide, 24 cm high, and 12 cm deep. You can adjust the measurements as needed to suit your preferences.

  • Outer Fabric (2 Colors): Choose sturdy fabrics like cotton canvas or denim.

    • Fabric A (Main Color): 2 pieces for the main panels (34cm x 16cm each), 1 piece for the bottom gusset (34cm x 14cm), 2 pieces for the side panels (16cm x 24cm each).

    • Fabric B (Accent Color): 2 pieces for the top panels (34cm x 12cm each).

  • Lining Fabric: A lighter-weight cotton fabric.

    • 2 pieces for the main lining (34cm x 28cm each), 1 piece for the bottom gusset (34cm x 14cm), 2 pieces for the side panels (16cm x 28cm each).

  • Inner Pocket Fabric: A light-to-medium weight fabric.

    • 2 pieces for the inner pocket (20cm x 16cm each).

  • Handles:

    • 2 long strips of webbing or fabric (6cm x 60cm each).

  • Zippers:

    • 1 main zipper for the top opening (34cm long).

  • Tools:

    • Sewing machine with a zipper foot

    • Fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

    • Pins or Clover clips

    • A ruler and fabric marker

    • An iron and ironing board

Part 1: Preparing the Fabric and Handles

Before you begin sewing the bag, it's crucial to prepare all your fabric pieces for a smooth and accurate project.

  1. Cut and Join Outer Panels: First, take your Fabric A and Fabric B main panels. Sew the two pieces together, right sides facing, along the 34cm edge to create a single main panel (34cm x 28cm). Repeat this for the second set of main panels. This creates the two-tone look.

  2. Make the Handles: Take your two handle strips (6cm x 60cm). Fold the long edges in towards the center and press with an iron. Then, fold the entire piece in half lengthwise, enclosing the raw edges. Press again and sew a topstitch along both long edges to create a finished handle.

Part 2: Constructing the Pockets and Bag Body

This is where the bag's shape and interior features start to come together.

  1. Make the Inner Pockets: Take your two inner pocket fabric pieces (20cm x 16cm). Lay them right sides together and sew along the three raw sides, leaving a small opening to turn. Turn the pocket right-side out, press, and topstitch the open edge closed.

  2. Attach the Handles: On the right side of your two-tone main outer panels, mark the placement for the handles. Pin the raw ends of the handles to the top edge of the panels. Sew them in place, reinforcing the stitches with a box stitch or an "X" for durability.

  3. Attach the Inner Pocket: On the right side of one of your main lining panels, mark the placement for the inner pocket. Pin your finished pocket in place and sew it along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.

  4. Sew the Panels Together: Pin the front and back outer panels to the side panels, right sides together. Sew the seams. Then, attach the bottom gusset to the rest of the bag's body. This will create a three-dimensional box shape for the bag's exterior. Repeat this process for the lining pieces to form the lining bag body, but leave a large opening (about 5-6 inches) in the bottom seam of the lining. This will be used to turn the bag right-side out later.

Part 3: Final Assembly and Finishing Touches

Now it's time to bring all the pieces together to create the final tote bag.

  1. Attach the Zipper: Pin the main zipper to the top opening of the outer bag, right sides facing. Sew it in place with a zipper foot.

  2. Attach the Lining: Pin the lining bag to the other side of the zipper, with the right side of the lining facing the right side of the zipper. Sew this seam.

  3. Turn and Close: Make sure the main zipper is open about halfway. Pull the entire bag through the opening you left in the bottom seam of the lining. Use your fingers to push out all the corners. Give the bag one final press. Hand-sew or machine-stitch the opening in the lining closed.

Your new two-tone zipper tote bag is now ready to use! Enjoy the satisfaction of having created a custom, organized, and stylish bag all by yourself.
