Finished Size (Approximate):

  • Dimensions: The size of your finished pouch will depend on the dimensions of the fabric you cut. The pouch in the video is a small, rectangular size, perfect for a cosmetic bag or pencil case.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Main Fabric & Lining Fabric: Two rectangles of fabric for the main body of the pouch and the lining.

  • Zipper: A zipper that is slightly longer than the width of your fabric rectangles.

  • Small Fabric Loop: A small rectangle of fabric for a loop to attach to the side of the pouch.

  • Sewing Machine

  • Thread: All-purpose thread that matches your fabric.

  • Ruler or Measuring Tape

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Pins or Clips

Pattern Pieces:

This project uses simple, rectangular shapes. You don't need a formal pattern, just a ruler and scissors!

  • Outer Fabric: Cut one rectangle for the main body of the pouch.

  • Lining Fabric: Cut one rectangle of the same size as your outer fabric.

  • Loop: Cut a small rectangle for an optional side loop.

Let's Sew Your Zipper Pouch!

This bag is constructed by first preparing all the individual pieces, then sewing them together, and finally adding the finishing touches.

Part 1: Preparing the Zipper

  1. Attach the Zipper: Sandwich the zipper between the outer fabric and the lining, with the right sides of the fabrics facing each other. The zipper should be face down on the right side of the outer fabric, and the lining fabric should be face down on top of the zipper.

  2. Sew the Zipper: Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, sew along the top edge to attach the zipper to the fabric pieces.

  3. Repeat for the other side: Repeat the process for the other side of the zipper, attaching the remaining outer and lining fabric pieces.

Part 2: Bag Construction & Assembly

  1. Create the Loop: If you are adding a loop, take your small fabric rectangle. Fold it in half lengthwise and sew along the long edge. Turn it right-side out and press.

  2. Sew the Side Seams: Open the fabric so the main fabric and lining are separated. Bring the side seams of the outer fabric together, right sides facing each other, and sew them. If you are adding a loop, pin it into the seam on one side before you sew. Repeat for the lining fabric, but leave a small opening (about 3 inches) in the bottom seam.

  3. Box the Corners: To create the box shape, pinch the corners of the outer fabric, with the seams aligned. Sew across the corner, creating a box shape. Repeat for all four corners (two outer fabric corners, two lining corners).

Part 3: Finishing

  1. Turn the Bag: Turn the pouch right side out through the opening you left in the lining.

  2. Close the Lining: Hand-stitch or machine-sew the opening in the lining closed.

  3. Top Stitch: The video shows adding a final top stitch along the zipper for a clean, professional finish.

  4. Final Press: Give your pouch a final press to make sure everything is crisp and neat.
