Inspired by a genius tutorial, this guide shows you how to transform a single rectangular piece of fabric into five different and functional pouches. From a structured box pouch to a flat pencil case, this versatile pattern is perfect for using up fabric scraps and making personalized gifts for friends and family.

Skill Level: Beginner

This pattern is ideal for anyone with a basic understanding of a sewing machine and simple sewing techniques. The designs are straightforward and are a great way to practice sewing zippers and creating different pouch shapes.

Finished Sizes (Approximate):

  • Pouch 1 (Box-shaped): 4.25 x 5 x 2.38 inches (11 x 12.5 x 6 cm)

  • Pouch 2 (Box-shaped with handle): 4 x 6.75 x 2.75 inches (10 x 17 x 7 cm)

  • Pouch 3 (Flat pouch with side handle): 4 x 6.75 x 2.38 inches (10 x 17 x 6 cm)

  • Pouch 4 (Pencil case-style): 4 x 7 x 3.5 inches (10 x 18 x 9 cm)

  • Pouch 5 (Flat pouch with pull tab): Approximately 6.75 x 9.5 inches (17 x 24 cm)

Materials You'll Need (for one pouch):

  • Main Fabric & Lining Fabric: Two rectangles measuring 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches (34 x 26 cm).

  • Interfacing: One rectangle of the same size to add structure and stability to your pouch.

  • Zipper: A 10 5/8 inch (27 cm) zipper.

  • Webbing/Cotton Tape: A piece of cotton webbing or ribbon for the handles or pull tabs (length depends on the pouch design you choose).

  • Sewing Machine

  • Thread: All-purpose thread that matches your fabric.

  • Ruler or Measuring Tape

  • Fabric Scissors

  • Pins or Clips

  • Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat (Optional)

The Versatile Pouch Pattern: The Base Piece

For all five designs, you will start with the same base pieces:

  • Cut one rectangle of main fabric to 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches (34 x 26 cm).

  • Cut one rectangle of lining fabric to 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches (34 x 26 cm).

  • Cut one rectangle of interfacing to 13 3/8 x 10 1/4 inches (34 x 26 cm).

  • Fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of your main fabric piece according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Now, follow the instructions for the pouch design you want to create!

Pouch 1: The Classic Box-Shaped Pouch

This is a great, simple box pouch that is perfect for makeup, small supplies, or a travel kit.

  1. Cut the Corners: Take your main fabric and lining pieces. At each of the four corners, cut out a square measuring 2 x 1 1/2 inches (5 x 4 cm).

  2. Attach the Zipper: Sandwich the zipper between the main fabric and the lining, with the right sides facing together. Sew along the top edge. Repeat for the other side of the zipper.

  3. Sew the Sides: Open the fabric so the main fabric and lining are separated. Bring the side seams together and sew them.

  4. Create the Box Shape: To create the box shape, pinch the corners you cut out and sew them closed.

  5. Finish: Turn the pouch right side out, and it's ready to use!

Pouch 2: The Box Pouch with a Handle

This pouch has a slightly different shape and a convenient handle, making it a great pencil case or grab-and-go pouch.

  1. Cut the Corners: At each of the four corners of your main fabric and lining pieces, cut out a square measuring 1 3/8 x 1 inch (3.5 x 2.5 cm).

  2. Attach the Handle: Take a 9-inch (23 cm) piece of cotton webbing. Fold it in half and pin it to the right side of the main fabric piece, aligning the raw edges with the top.

  3. Attach the Zipper: Follow the same steps as Pouch 1 to attach the zipper.

  4. Sew the Sides & Box Shape: Follow the same steps as Pouch 1 to sew the side seams and create the box shape by sewing the corners closed.

  5. Finish: Turn the pouch right side out. The handle will be attached and your pouch is complete.

Pouch 3: The Flat Pouch with a Side Handle

This flat-style pouch is perfect for storing documents, a tablet, or a small notebook.

  1. Cut the Corners: Cut out a square measuring 1 3/8 x 1 inch (3.5 x 2.5 cm) from the bottom two corners only of your main fabric and lining pieces.

  2. Attach the Handle: Take a 7-inch (18 cm) piece of webbing. Fold it in half and pin it to the side edge of the main fabric piece, aligning the raw edges.

  3. Attach the Zipper: Follow the same steps as Pouch 1 to attach the zipper.

  4. Sew the Sides: Sew the side seams, but do not sew the corners closed.

  5. Finish: Turn the pouch right side out, and you have a stylish, flat pouch with a handle!

Pouch 4: The Pencil Case-Style Pouch

This design has a wider bottom, making it an excellent pencil case or makeup bag that stands upright on its own.

  1. Mark the Corners: Instead of cutting, mark the corners. On both the main fabric and lining pieces, mark a spot 3 inches (7.5 cm) from the bottom edge on each side.

  2. Attach the Zipper: Follow the same steps as Pouch 1 to attach the zipper.

  3. Sew the Sides & Markings: Sew the side seams, then pinch the bottom of the pouch at the markings you made. Sew a straight line across the bottom to create the wide base.

  4. Finish: Turn the pouch right side out. The bottom of the pouch will be wide and flat, perfect for holding a lot of items.

Pouch 5: The Flat Pouch with a Pull Tab

This is a classic, simple pouch that is perfect for everyday use.

  1. Cut the Corners: Cut out a square measuring 2 x 1 1/2 inches (5 x 4 cm) from the four corners of the main fabric and lining pieces.

  2. Attach the Pull Tab: Take a 6-inch (15 cm) piece of cotton webbing. Fold it in half and pin it to the right side of the main fabric, aligned with the top edge near the zipper. This will be your pull tab.

  3. Attach the Zipper: Follow the same steps as Pouch 1 to attach the zipper.

  4. Sew the Sides: Sew the side seams of the pouch.

  5. Finish: Turn the pouch right side out. You will have a simple, flat pouch with a convenient pull tab.

Enjoy making your very own versatile pouches! It's amazing what you can create from a single pattern.
