Skill Level: Beginner

Finished Size (Approximate):

  • Varies based on the size of your water bottle.

  • The bag is designed to fit a standard water bottle, thermos, or even a collection of pencils.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Main Fabric:

    • Two pieces of cotton fabric, each measuring 11.8 inches x 9.8 inches (30 cm x 25 cm).

  • Wadding (Polyester):

    • One piece of polyester wadding, measuring 11.8 inches x 9.8 inches (30 cm x 25 cm).

  • Zipper:

    • One long zipper, approximately 35.4 inches (90 cm).

  • Straps:

    • A piece of fabric for the strap, measuring 11 inches x 0.8 inches (28 cm x 2 cm).

  • Thread: A thread color that matches your fabrics.

  • Sewing Machine

  • Scissors

  • Pins or Clips

  • Rotary Cutter & Mat (Optional)

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions:

Part 1: Preparing the Fabric & Quilted Panel

  1. Place one piece of your main fabric on a flat surface, right side down.

  2. Lay the polyester wadding on top of the fabric.

  3. Place the second piece of main fabric on top of the wadding, right side up.

  4. Pin the three layers together.

  5. Sew straight lines across the fabric to quilt the three layers together. You can sew in a grid pattern or any pattern you like.

  6. Create the Rounded Edge: At the bottom of your quilted panel, use a circular object (like a bowl or plate) that is 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter to trace a rounded corner. Cut out this rounded corner on both bottom sides of the quilted panel.

Part 2: Sewing the Strap

  1. Take your strap fabric piece. Fold it in half lengthwise, right sides together, and sew a seam along the long edge.

  2. Turn the strap right side out and press it flat.

  3. Topstitch along both long edges for a professional finish.

  4. Pin one end of the strap to the middle of one of the 9.8-inch (25 cm) sides of your quilted panel. Baste it in place.

Part 3: Inserting the Zipper

  1. Take your long zipper. Place the quilted panel right side up on a flat surface.

  2. Pin the zipper along one of the long 11.8-inch (30 cm) edges of the quilted panel, with the zipper teeth facing down. The zipper should extend past the fabric on both ends.

  3. Sew the zipper to the fabric using a zipper foot.

  4. Repeat this process for the other long edge of the quilted panel, aligning it with the other side of the zipper.

  5. Fold the fabric so the two zipper edges are aligned, and the right side of the fabric is facing inwards.

  6. Pin the zipper edges together and sew the zipper closed, connecting the two long sides of the fabric.

Part 4: Assembling the Bag

  1. With the fabric still inside out, sew the two side seams together, from the end of the zipper down to the rounded corners.

  2. Create the Flat Bottom: At the bottom, align the side seam with the bottom seam (the rounded corner) to create a flat, boxed corner. Sew across this seam to create a flat bottom.

  3. Finish the Zipper Ends: Cut two small rectangular pieces of fabric. Fold them in half and pin them to the raw ends of the zipper to cover them. Sew in place.

Part 5: Finishing Touches

  1. Turn the entire bag right side out through the open zipper.

  2. Use a point turner to gently push out the seams and corners.

  3. Press the bag to give it a finished look.

  4. The finished bag can be used to hold a water bottle, pencils, or other items.
