Cutting Your Fabric Pieces:

  • From Old Jeans:

    • Bag Body: Cut a large rectangular piece from the leg of the jeans. The video shows trimming this piece and rounding the corners.

    • Pockets: Cut two smaller pieces of denim for the outer pockets.

  • From Red Cotton Fabric:

    • Handles: Cut two long strips.

    • Lining Inlay: Cut one large rectangular piece for the lining of the sides and bottom.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions:

Part 1: Preparing the Denim & Pockets

  1. Cut the Denim: Start by cutting a large rectangular piece from the leg of an old pair of jeans. Make sure it's large enough to be the main body of your bag.

  2. Add Structure: Iron the thermo adhesive polyester wadding onto the inside of the main denim piece. This will give the bag a firm, structured feel.

  3. Create the Pockets: Take your two smaller denim pieces. Sew a strip of the red cotton fabric to the top of each piece to create a finished top edge for the pocket.

  4. Attach the Pockets: Place the pockets on the main denim body, in your desired position. Pin them in place and sew along the side and bottom edges, leaving the top open.

Part 2: Making and Attaching the Handles

  1. Make the Handles: Take your two long strips of red cotton fabric. Fold each strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and sew a seam along the long edge.

  2. Turn the handles right side out and press them flat. Topstitch along both long edges for a professional finish.

  3. Attach the Handles: Place the ends of the handles onto the main denim body, on the inside. Pin them in place and sew them securely to the denim.

Part 3: Assembling the Bag

  1. Add the Inlay: The video shows a red cotton inlay being sewn to the sides and bottom of the bag. This creates a contrasting inner lining. Pin the red cotton fabric to the inside of the denim body, aligning the sides and bottom edges. Sew them together securely.

  2. Sew the Sides: Fold the entire piece in half, with the right sides of the fabric together. Sew the side seams and the bottom seam, leaving the top open.

  3. Create the Boxed Corners: At the bottom corners, pinch the side seam and the bottom seam together to form a triangle. Sew a straight line across the corner. Trim the excess fabric. Repeat for the other corner.

Part 4: Finishing Touches

  1. Turn the entire bag right side out.

  2. Use a point turner to gently push out the seams and corners.

  3. Press the top edge of the bag, making sure the seam is hidden.

  4. Topstitch all the way around the top of the bag to give it a professional finish.

Versatile Uses for Your Recycled Denim Tote Bag:

  • Everyday Carryall: Spacious enough for your essentials, a small laptop, or a tablet.

  • Shopping Bag: A reusable and stylish alternative for groceries or market trips.

  • Beach Bag: Perfect for towels, sunscreen, and beach reads.

  • Gift: A thoughtful and impressive handmade gift.

Customization & Tips:

  • Denim Variation: Use different shades of denim, or even patchwork pieces, for a unique look.

  • Pocket Count: You can add more pockets to the inside of the bag for better organization.

  • Handle Length: Adjust the length of the handles to create a shoulder bag, a crossbody bag, or a handbag.

  • Closure: Add a magnetic snap or a button and loop to the top of the bag for a secure closure.

Enjoy sewing your own beautiful, practical, and unique denim tote bag! It's a fantastic way to create a personalized accessory that's sure to become a favorite.
